Pakistan, KSA Review Regional Situation After US Rejects Iran Proposal

(MENAFN) Ishaq Dar and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan held discussions on Monday focusing on regional developments following US President Donald Trump’s rejection of Iran’s latest response to a US proposal aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.

According to a statement from Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, Prince Faisal praised Pakistan’s “constructive role” and reaffirmed Riyadh’s backing for Islamabad’s diplomatic efforts to support peace and stability in the region, particularly regarding ongoing contacts between Iran and the United States.

The two ministers also exchanged views on the importance of protecting maritime security, including stability in the Strait of Hormuz, and agreed to maintain close coordination on regional and international issues.

Tensions in the region escalated after the US and Israel carried out strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, prompting retaliatory actions from Tehran against Israel and US allies in the Gulf, along with disruptions affecting the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire was later implemented on April 8 through mediation led by Pakistan, although subsequent talks in Islamabad failed to produce a durable agreement. The truce was later extended by Trump without a fixed deadline.

Iran recently submitted its response to a US peace proposal via Pakistan, but Trump described it as “totally unacceptable,” rejecting it outright.
