Philippine Lower House Votes to Impeach Vice President Duterte Again

(MENAFN) Lawmakers in the Philippines’ lower house vote on Monday to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte for the second time in two years, according to reports.

She faces accusations of graft as well as alleged public threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The 318-member House of Representatives proceeds with the vote after its justice committee determines there is “probable cause” in the complaints filed against her. According to reports, Duterte is seen as a leading contender in the 2028 presidential race.

A total of 255 lawmakers support the impeachment move, surpassing the 215 who had previously signed the complaint last year. Twenty-six members oppose the decision, while nine abstain and at least 28 do not participate in the vote.

Only 106 votes are required under Philippine law to impeach a vice president.

According to reports, the case now moves to the Senate, where a trial will be held that could result in either conviction or acquittal.
