UN Hails Short Ceasefire, Prisoner Swap Plan Between Russia, Ukraine
(MENAFN) The United Nations on Saturday expressed support for a recently announced three-day ceasefire and a large-scale prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia, following an announcement made by US President Donald Trump.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the development, highlighting both the ceasefire initiative and the planned exchange of detainees between the two countries.
“I welcome the announcement of a ceasefire and the planned large-scale exchange of prisoners between Ukraine and Russia,” Guterres said.
“I commend the efforts of the USA in facilitating this agreement and fully support its implementation,” he added in a post shared on the US social media platform X.
He also renewed his broader appeal for a permanent halt to hostilities, urging an “immediate, full, unconditional and lasting ceasefire” as a foundation for what he described as a fair and lasting peace consistent with international law and the UN Charter.
Earlier, Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a three-day truce scheduled for May 9–11, along with a planned 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange.
“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War. Talks are continuing on ending this Major Conflict, the biggest since World War II, and we are getting closer and closer every day,” he said.
