UN Chief Hails Trump's Ukraine-Russia Ceasefire, Prisoner Swap

(MENAFN) The United Nations threw its support behind the US-brokered truce between Russia and Ukraine on Saturday, welcoming President Donald Trump's announcement of a three-day ceasefire spanning May 9–11, alongside a large-scale prisoner exchange.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres offered his endorsement swiftly and publicly. "I welcome the announcement of a ceasefire and the planned large-scale exchange of prisoners between Ukraine and Russia," he said.

Posting on X, Guterres extended credit directly to Washington for brokering the arrangement. "I commend the efforts of the USA in facilitating this agreement and fully support its implementation," he wrote.

The UN chief used the moment to renew his broader appeal for a durable resolution to the conflict. "I reiterate my call for an immediate, full, unconditional and lasting ceasefire, as a first step toward a just, sustainable and comprehensive peace, in line with the UN Charter and international law," he said.

The announcement followed Trump's post Friday on Truth Social, in which he confirmed that both Kyiv and Moscow had agreed to the three-day halt in fighting and a 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner swap.

"Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War. Talks are continuing on ending this Major Conflict, the biggest since World War II, and we are getting closer and closer every day," Trump added.
