Trump Expects Close Iran Response on Peace Plan
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump signaled Saturday that a pivotal response from Tehran on Washington's latest diplomatic proposal is on the horizon, expressing confidence that a nuclear deal remains within reach.
Speaking by phone with a French television network, Trump said he "expects to hear very soon" from Iran regarding the proposed framework, and asserted that the Iranians "still very much want to make a deal."
The comments come amid a fragile regional calm following a dramatic escalation that began Feb. 28, when US and Israeli forces struck Iran, setting off a chain of Iranian retaliatory attacks against Israel and American partners across the Gulf. The crisis also triggered the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, sending shockwaves through global energy markets.
A ceasefire brokered by Pakistan entered into force on April 8, though subsequent talks in Islamabad collapsed without yielding a permanent settlement. Trump later declared a truce extension, offering no fixed expiration date.
On the European front, Trump also weighed in on the Victory Day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, saying "it would be nice to see the ceasefire extended" — and taking personal credit for the pause in fighting, claiming he "made the deal" directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
