Israel Powerless Against Hezbollah's Fiber-Optic Drones
(MENAFN) Israel has yet to find a reliable countermeasure against Hezbollah's increasingly advanced fiber-optic drones in southern Lebanon, Israeli media reported Saturday, as the unmanned aircraft continue to degrade operational effectiveness on the ground.
An Israeli public broadcaster cited an anonymous military official confirming that the army had recently deployed "smart targeting systems" in southern Lebanon in a bid to sharpen its capacity to track and neutralize the drones. Hundreds of "Dagger" night-vision scopes have also been distributed to soldiers to boost targeting accuracy during nighttime engagements, the report added.
Hezbollah's fiber-optic drone fleet has become one of the Israeli army's most pressing operational headaches in the south, given the extreme difficulty of detecting and intercepting them, the broadcaster reported. The drones have continued striking Israeli troops and military vehicles amid ongoing Israeli incursions into southern Lebanon, with no effective solution yet in place.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged in late April that Hezbollah missiles and drones constituted "two major threats," calling on military commanders to urgently develop countermeasures.
The confrontation continues despite a ceasefire that took effect April 17 and was extended through mid-May, with the Israeli army pressing forward with daily strikes and sustained exchanges of fire with Hezbollah. Since Israel broadened its offensive into Lebanon on March 2 — shortly after the Iran war erupted in late February — more than 2,700 people have been killed and over one million displaced. Israel also continues to hold a self-designated "buffer zone" inside Lebanese territory. The US is set to host renewed peace talks between the two sides in Washington on May 14–15.
