Activists’ Testimonies of Detention Abuses Renew Calls for Accountability
(MENAFN) Youssef Ajissa, head of the International Committee to Break the Siege on Gaza, shared accounts on Friday from activists involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla. According to him, the participants described mistreatment during their detention after Israeli forces intercepted the Gaza-bound aid mission.
Ajissa relayed, via reports carried by a news agency, that some activists testified that detainees were exposed to "sexual violence, in addition to beatings, dragging, handcuffing, and blindfolding,".
He further noted that "Israeli violations included sexual assaults and harassment," alongside physical assaults, characterizing the situation as "a blatant violation of human dignity."
He went on to argue that "These violations reveal the true nature of the Israeli entity, its criminality, and brutality, and the extent of its danger to the region and the world,".
He also criticized what he called a muted global reaction, stating, "weak international response to the incident," and expressing that "We were shocked by the lack of widespread reaction and condemnation, especially from the European Union, regarding what the Zionist entity did."
Concluding his remarks, Ajissa stressed that stronger measures are required, asserting that "imposing sanctions on Israel has become a necessity because it is escalating its violations due to the absence of accountability."
