EU Urges Protection of Religious Symbols After Incident in S. Lebanon
(MENAFN) The European Union on Friday emphasized the importance of safeguarding religious symbols and upholding freedom of worship following reports that an Israeli soldier desecrated a Virgin Mary statue in southern Lebanon.
“We recall the importance of preserving and protecting symbols of worship and ensuring freedom of religion,” EU foreign affairs spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said in a written statement to a media outlet.
He also called for restraint amid ongoing tensions, noting the fragile nature of the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel.
“We continue to urge restraint in light of the fragile ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel and talks are underway to reach a sustainable agreement,” he added.
An Israeli public broadcaster reported that the Israeli military confirmed the incident was “under review.”
The reported case comes amid broader allegations of incidents involving damage to Christian religious symbols and sites in Christian-majority areas in southern Lebanon, which have drawn criticism and concern.
