Canada’s PM, Lebanon’s President Discuss Support During Phone Call
(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a phone call on Friday with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, during which he expressed Canada’s support for Lebanon amid ongoing regional instability and humanitarian challenges, according to an official government statement.
Carney voiced solidarity with the Lebanese population, citing “widespread destruction, displacement, and civilian deaths,” and reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to providing both humanitarian aid and security assistance.
He also supported the Lebanese government’s efforts to disarm Hezbollah, while condemning the group’s attacks on Israel.
According to the statement, Carney “condemned Israel’s illegal invasion of Lebanon and reaffirmed Canada’s steadfast support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
He further emphasized the importance of maintaining a ceasefire and ensuring that displaced civilians are able to return to their homes safely.
Canada also reiterated its backing for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), describing it as a key component of international efforts aimed at preserving stability along the Israel-Lebanon border.
