Canada's Carney Denounces Israel's Lebanon Invasion
(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a phone call Friday with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, reaffirming Ottawa's solidarity with Beirut amid escalating regional tensions and a deepening humanitarian crisis, a government statement confirmed.
Carney expressed direct support for the Lebanese people enduring "widespread destruction, displacement, and civilian deaths," pledging Canada's continued commitment to both humanitarian relief and security assistance on the ground.
The Canadian leader voiced backing for the Lebanese government's ongoing push to disarm Hezbollah, condemning the group's cross-border attacks against Israel. In the same breath, however, Carney "condemned Israel's illegal invasion of Lebanon and reaffirmed Canada's steadfast support for Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity," the statement read.
Carney pressed for the full preservation of the existing ceasefire agreement and called for conditions that would allow the safe return of civilians forced from their homes. Ottawa also reaffirmed its support for the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), underscoring Canada's role in broader international efforts to sustain peace and stability along the Israel-Lebanon border.
The statements come against a grim backdrop: despite a ceasefire declared on April 17 and subsequently extended through mid-May, the Israeli military has continued daily strikes across Lebanon. The current wave of hostilities, which erupted on March 2 following Hezbollah's retaliatory response to the Iran war, has now claimed more than 2,700 lives and uprooted over 1 million people from their homes.
