Trump Rules Out Immediate Iran Talks Despite Deal Reports
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has said it is “too soon” to pursue direct face-to-face peace talks with Iran, even as reports suggest Washington and Tehran are close to shaping a framework agreement aimed at ending a 67-day conflict.
According to reports, Trump dismissed the idea of sending representatives to Pakistan for another round of negotiations after sources in Islamabad indicated that a preliminary deal may be approaching completion.
“I don’t think so,” Trump said, adding: “I think we’ll do it— it’s too far. No, it’s too much.”
In earlier remarks posted on social media, Trump tied any potential agreement to Iran accepting previously discussed conditions. He warned that progress depended entirely on compliance with those terms.
“Assuming Iran agrees to give what has been agreed to, which is, perhaps, a big assumption, the already legendary Epic Fury will be at an end,” he wrote, adding that otherwise “the bombing starts” at a “much higher level and intensity.”
Trump has also previously signaled openness to traveling to Pakistan to formalize an agreement, pointing to the involvement of Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, in mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran.
The president reportedly ended his conversation with journalists abruptly, saying he had to attend a meeting with “the generals.”
