UN Demands Release of Detained Global Sumud Flotilla Activists
(MENAFN) The UN Human Rights Office on Wednesday urged Israel to free two members of the Global Sumud humanitarian aid flotilla who were detained at sea and remain in Israeli custody without formal charges, according to statements released by the organization.
“Israel must immediately and unconditionally release Global Sumud Flotilla members Saif Abukeshek and Thiago de Avila, who were detained in international waters and brought to Israel where they continue to be held without charge,” spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan said in a statement.
The UN official stressed that attempts to deliver humanitarian support to Gaza should not be treated as criminal acts, particularly given the humanitarian conditions inside the enclave.
“It is not a crime to show solidarity and attempt to bring humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population in Gaza, who are in dire need of it,” he added.
According to the statement, the UN Human Rights Office also raised concern over reports describing harsh treatment of the two detainees and called for a full investigation into the allegations.
“Disturbing accounts of severe mistreatment of Abukeshek and de Avila must be investigated, and those responsible must be brought to justice,” he said.
Al-Kheetan further criticized Israel’s use of what he described as arbitrary detention measures and broadly interpreted anti-terrorism laws, saying such practices conflict with international human rights standards.
He also called on Israel to lift restrictions on Gaza and permit humanitarian supplies to enter the territory “in sufficient amounts.”
