UN Calls for Release of Aid Flotilla Activists Detained by Israel

(MENAFN) The United Nations Human Rights Office has urged the immediate and unconditional release of two activists detained after participating in a humanitarian maritime mission linked to Gaza.

According to a statement from the UN human rights spokesperson, Thameen Al-Kheetan, the detainees—identified as Saif Abukeshek and Thiago de Avila—were taken into custody after being intercepted at sea and are currently being held in Israel without formal charges.

The UN emphasized that providing humanitarian assistance or expressing solidarity with civilians should not be treated as a criminal act, particularly in relation to the population in the Gaza Strip, where urgent aid needs were highlighted.

The statement also raised concerns about reported mistreatment of the detainees and called for a full investigation to ensure accountability. It further criticized the use of broadly defined legal frameworks for detention, arguing that such practices may conflict with international human rights standards.

The flotilla involved in the incident was part of a planned humanitarian mission intended to deliver aid and challenge restrictions on access to Gaza. Reports indicate that the vessels were intercepted at sea before reaching their destination, with activists detained during the operation.

According to accounts referenced in reports, the interception occurred in international waters during the approach toward the region. A larger group of participants was also detained in connection with the mission.

The UN statement additionally reiterated calls for broader access for humanitarian assistance into Gaza and urged that restrictions on aid delivery be eased to allow supplies to reach civilians in sufficient quantities.
