South Korea Drops Review of US Strait of Hormuz Mission Proposal

Date:

(MENAFN) South Korea said on Wednesday that it no longer considers it necessary to review a US proposal for participation in a mission in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a statement from the presidential office cited by reports, “Suspension of Project Freedom makes Seoul's review of participation unnecessary.”

The decision follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement on Tuesday that the US military would temporarily pause “Project Freedom,” an initiative aimed at ensuring safe passage for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump had previously urged Seoul to join the mission, which was introduced on Sunday, as part of efforts to secure maritime traffic in the strategic waterway, where tensions have been high due to blockades involving Iran and US forces.

South Korea had earlier indicated it was reviewing the US request.

Separately, a South Korean-flagged vessel carrying 24 crew members reportedly caught fire after an explosion near the Strait of Hormuz, off the coast of the United Arab Emirates.

Before announcing the decision to end its review, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung was briefed on Wednesday about the condition of the disabled HMM Namu vessel.
