Spain Calls on EU to Safeguard ICC, UN Role Over Gaza Situation

(MENAFN) Spain’s prime minister on Wednesday urged the European Commission to take measures aimed at safeguarding the independence of the International Criminal Court and the United Nations, as well as their efforts related to ending what he described as the genocide in Gaza.

“We ask the Commission to activate the Anti-Coercion Instrument, to protect the independence of the International Criminal Court and the United Nations, and their actions to end the genocide in Gaza,” Pedro Sanchez said on the social media platform X, as stated by reports.

He stressed that Spain would “not look the other way,” warning that imposing sanctions on those working to uphold international justice could undermine the global human rights framework.

He also added that the EU should not remain a bystander “in the face of this persecution.”

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 72,600 people, mostly women and children, have been killed and over 172,000 others injured since the beginning of the Israeli military campaign in October 2023.

Despite a ceasefire being in place since last October, Israeli authorities have reportedly restricted the entry of agreed humanitarian aid supplies into the territory, where around 2.4 million Palestinians live, including about 1.5 million who have been displaced, amid severe humanitarian conditions.
