France Says Was Not Targeted in Hormuz Ship Attack
(MENAFN) France distanced itself Wednesday from a militant strike on a vessel operated by French shipping giant CMA CGM, insisting the assault in the Strait of Hormuz was not directed at the country.
French government spokesperson Maud Bregeon clarified the position following a cabinet session, pointing to the ship's registry and crew as key factors in France's assessment.
"The CMA CGM vessel was not flying the French flag. It was a Maltese-flagged ship with a Filipino crew," Bregeon told reporters after the meeting.
"As things stand, France was therefore in no way the target," she said.
Bregeon further noted that Paris had played no role in any U.S.-led military operations tied to the broader regional conflict, maintaining a stance it has held since hostilities first erupted.
Despite France's position, Bregeon warned that the incident underscored the ongoing volatility of one of the world's most critical maritime corridors, saying the attack confirmed the strait "remains dangerous."
The CMA CGM container ship San Antonio came under attack Tuesday while navigating the Strait of Hormuz, the company confirmed. The strike left several crew members wounded and caused structural damage to the vessel. CMA CGM did not specify the number of injured personnel or elaborate on the extent of the ship's damage.
