Moscow, Washington Hold “Constructive” Diplomatic Call

(MENAFN) Sergey Lavrov and Marco Rubio have held what Moscow described as a “constructive” telephone conversation, marking renewed communication between the two governments, according to statements from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

During the call, both sides reviewed the current state of international developments and the broader condition of relations between Russia and the United States. They also discussed the timeline for upcoming diplomatic engagements between the two countries.

Officials characterized the discussion as “constructive and businesslike,” while noting that the US State Department had not yet issued a public response.

The conversation was the first publicly acknowledged contact between the two diplomats in more than six months. It also followed recent communication between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, during which several international issues were reportedly addressed.

According to Russian accounts, the leaders discussed the ceasefire related to the Iran conflict, the risk of escalation in the Middle East, and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The renewed diplomatic engagement is part of broader efforts initiated after Trump’s return to office, following a period of severely limited contact during the previous US administration. Washington has also attempted to revive negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

However, multiple rounds of US-mediated discussions between Moscow and Kyiv have so far failed to produce significant progress. Reports suggest that diplomatic momentum has slowed amid rising global tensions linked to the Middle East conflict involving Iran and Israel.
