Spain Urges EU Action to Safeguard ICC, UN Amid Gaza's Genocide

(MENAFN) Spain’s prime minister has called on the European Union to take stronger measures to defend the independence of international legal and humanitarian institutions, including the International Criminal Court and the United Nations, amid ongoing disputes over the genocide in Gaza.

In remarks posted on social media, he urged the European Commission to activate mechanisms designed to counter external pressure on international bodies, arguing that their autonomy must be protected in order to support global justice efforts.

He warned that targeting institutions involved in international legal accountability risks undermining the broader human rights framework, stressing that Europe should not remain passive in the face of such developments.

The statement comes amid continued international controversy over the conduct of the war in Gaza, where local authorities report extremely high civilian casualties and widespread destruction since the conflict began in 2023.

Despite a reported ceasefire arrangement in place since late last year, humanitarian conditions in the enclave remain severe, with limited access to aid and large-scale displacement of the population still ongoing, according to local figures cited in reports.
