Germany Urges Israel to Avoid Turning Southern Lebanon into War Zone
(MENAFN) As stated by reports, Germany has warned against the risk of southern Lebanon becoming a full-scale battlefield, stressing that civilians should not be the ones suffering from the ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed “deep concern” over the deteriorating security situation in southern Lebanon, where Israeli military operations have reportedly intensified since March.
“We condemn Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel in the strongest possible terms. They must finally end,” Wadephul said alongside Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar after a meeting in Berlin.
“At the same time, Lebanon must not become a war zone where civilians pay the price, where the younger generation grows up in the ruins of their homes — that won’t make Israel’s neighborhood any safer.”
According to his remarks, Germany believes that long-term stability in Lebanon can only be achieved by reinforcing the Lebanese state so it can fully assert control over the use of force within its territory. He also expressed support for initiating direct dialogue between Lebanon and Israel.
“I encourage both sides to take this step further,” he said. “What is needed now is a viable agreement to protect civilians on both sides of the Blue Line, ensure the safety of UNIFIL peacekeepers, and achieve long-term peace.”
