UN Records Highest Gunfire in S. Lebanon Since Ceasefire Took Place
(MENAFN) The United Nations has recorded the greatest number of exchanges of fire in southern Lebanon since hostilities officially ceased, raising fresh alarm over the fragility of the truce between Israeli forces and armed factions, including Hezbollah.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric delivered the warning Tuesday at a press briefing, drawing on data from the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL). He stated that "yesterday saw the highest number of exchanges of fire between the Israeli Defense Forces and armed groups, including Hezbollah, and that was the highest number inside Lebanon since the cessation of hostilities."
The figures behind that assessment are striking. On April 17, UNIFIL logged 619 launches by Israeli forces that impacted Lebanese territory, alongside "30 launches towards Israeli targets," Dujarric confirmed — underscoring the scale of an escalation that threatens to unravel one of the region's most closely watched ceasefires.
Amid the renewed volatility, UN partners on the ground are pressing ahead with relief operations wherever access permits.
