France Voices Concern Over Lebanon, Backs Ceasefire, Sovereignty
(MENAFN) France has reiterated its “deep concern” over developments in Lebanon while reaffirming support for the ceasefire and the country’s sovereignty, following recent discussions with the United States, according to reports.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot conveyed the position during a phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 3, as stated by the Foreign Ministry.
In its statement, the ministry said Barrot “voiced France’s deep concern about the situation in Lebanon and reaffirmed France’s commitment to observance of the ceasefire and the safeguarding of Lebanese sovereignty.”
He also expressed support for what he described as a process of direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, arguing that such talks should contribute to “Hezbollah’s disarmament, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the establishment of a path towards peace and security for those two countries,” according to reports.
