Russia, Qatar Foreign Ministers Hold Phone Talks on Hormuz Crisis

(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Qatari counterpart Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani held a phone call Tuesday to address the escalating situation in and around the Strait of Hormuz, with both officials throwing their weight behind a diplomatic resolution to the standoff.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the two ministers reached a shared position: that any attempt to resolve the crisis through military force must be abandoned, and that all parties involved should instead direct their efforts toward achieving a durable, long-term political settlement.

Both officials emphasized that any viable agreement must safeguard the legitimate security interests of all Gulf states while simultaneously guaranteeing freedom of navigation through the strategically vital waterway.

Qatar's Foreign Ministry added that the conversation also covered bilateral cooperation between the two countries and avenues for strengthening it, alongside a broader discussion of regional developments — with particular focus on the US-Iran ceasefire and ongoing efforts to reduce tensions and reinforce security and stability across the region.

Al-Thani and Lavrov further underscored the urgency of ensuring that all parties remain responsive to active mediation efforts, calling for dialogue and peaceful means to address the underlying causes of the crisis and reach a sustainable agreement that forecloses the possibility of renewed escalation.

The diplomatic exchange comes against a backdrop of sharply elevated regional tensions that trace back to Feb. 28, when the US and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran, triggering retaliatory action from Tehran and significant disruption to shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

A Pakistani-brokered ceasefire came into effect on April 8, though subsequent negotiations in Islamabad failed to yield a binding agreement. US President Donald Trump later extended the truce with no fixed expiration. Since April 13, the US Navy has enforced a naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime activity across the waterway.
