Lebanon’s President Calls for Direct Talks with Israel to Secure Peace
(MENAFN) Lebanon’s president said Tuesday that direct negotiations with Israel represent “the only remaining path to achieving a lasting peace,” as he reiterated his commitment to ending ongoing conflict and stabilizing the country, according to reports.
Speaking at the presidential palace in Baabda during a meeting with representatives from southern Lebanese towns, President Joseph Aoun said the situation in the south has nationwide consequences. “When the south suffers, all of Lebanon is affected. It is time for the south, and all of Lebanon, to find relief,” he said.
He stressed that his priority is securing a durable peace rather than temporary calm, adding that he remains committed to efforts aimed at ending hostilities and ensuring long-term stability.
“I stand with our people in the south and appreciate their resilience despite the difficult conditions and their attachment to their land and property,” he said.
Aoun added that, in his view, other options have already been exhausted. “The path of direct negotiations (with Israel) is the only one left after other options, including war, have been exhausted,” he stated.
He also called for strengthening the role of the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon, urging that it should be the sole authority responsible for security in the region, according to reports.
