US Says Multiple Vessels Redirected Under Iran Maritime Blockade
(MENAFN) The United States announced Tuesday that it has redirected 51 vessels attempting to travel to or from Iranian ports as part of its ongoing naval blockade, according to reports.
In a statement shared online, US Central Command said, "As of today, 51 vessels have been directed to turn around or return to port in order to stop commercial ships from entering or leaving Iran," noting a slight increase from the previously reported total of 49 ships.
Reports also indicated that US naval personnel aboard a guided-missile destroyer were actively overseeing operations in the Arabian Sea as enforcement of the blockade continues.
The maritime restrictions have been in place since April 13, with US forces targeting shipping linked to Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. The move comes in response to Iran’s earlier limitations on vessel movement through the strategic waterway amid the conflict that began on Feb. 28 and is currently paused under a temporary halt in fighting, according to reports.
