Chee Meng Tan

Chee Meng is an Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham Malaysia. A geoeconomist by training, his research explores how nations employ sanctions, export controls, foreign investment screening, critical minerals, chokepoints, and technological standards as instruments of power in global affairs.
He writes regularly on China's economic and foreign policy, focusing on how Beijing leverages soft power through initiatives such as panda diplomacy and leadership in green technology to advance its national interests.
A frequent commentator on Malaysia's National News Agency (Bernama), Chee Meng has also been featured in international outlets including the BBC, CNN, NHK, and NBC News.
He holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration from ESSEC Business School in Paris and a doctorate in Economics from the University of Cergy-Pontoise (now CY Cergy Paris University).
