Aliyev Meets Italy’s Prime Minister in Bilateral Talks in Azerbaijan

(MENAFN) A one-on-one meeting was held on Monday between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who was visiting Azerbaijan on a working trip, according to official presidential information.

The discussion followed broader negotiations in expanded format, where Aliyev highlighted the importance of Italy as a major market for Azerbaijan’s oil and gas exports. He pointed out that 25 billion cubic meters of natural gas were exported last year, with 9.5 billion cubic meters specifically delivered to Italy.

Aliyev added that both sides are currently exploring ways to further boost export volumes. He emphasized that reaching this goal would require additional development of the TAP (Trans Adriatic Pipeline), which is part of the Southern Gas Corridor. He noted that some expansion has already taken place, but further work is still underway.

“To achieve this, it is naturally necessary to expand the TAP (Trans Adriatic Pipeline) project, which is part of the Southern Gas Corridor. It has already been expanded to a certain extent, but this process is ongoing,” Aliyev said, according to a news agency.

He also underlined that Azerbaijan and Italy maintain a strategic partnership, describing Italy as Azerbaijan’s leading trade partner.
