UN Reports Escalation of Israeli Airstrikes in Southern Lebanon
(MENAFN) The United Nations has warned of a highly unstable situation in Lebanon, citing intensified Israeli military activity in the country’s south over the weekend, according to reports on Monday.
A UN spokesperson said that UNIFIL observers recorded significant Israeli Defense Forces activity, including what were described as extensive airstrikes near several villages in southern Lebanon, along with continued naval operations off the coast near Naqoura.
The spokesperson also reported movement restrictions affecting UN peacekeeping operations. According to the statement, Israeli tanks blocked roads during a UNIFIL patrol near Al Bayyadah on Friday, limiting the peacekeepers’ ability to move freely in the area.
In a further incident, machine gun fire was reported to have impacted a UNIFIL position in the At-Tiri area in the Bint Jbeil district. One round reportedly struck a vehicle located inside the compound.
The UN emphasized that peacekeeping forces must not be placed in harm’s way and reiterated that their safety and security must be fully respected under international obligations.
Officials described the overall situation in southern Lebanon as volatile, with continued military activity contributing to heightened tensions in the region, according to reports.
