UN Warns of Severe Prosthetic Care Crisis in Gaza
(MENAFN) The United Nations has warned of a growing humanitarian and medical crisis in the Gaza Strip, noting that children make up a significant share of amputees, according to remarks delivered on Monday.
A UN spokesperson said that one in five amputees in Gaza is a child, highlighting the scale of injuries resulting from ongoing conflict and the strain on already limited medical services.
He added that more than 6,600 people are currently in need of prosthetic and rehabilitation care, including a large number who have undergone amputations since October 2023. However, only a very small number of trained specialists are available to provide treatment.
According to the statement, there are just eight prosthetic technicians in Gaza to meet the overwhelming demand. The UN warned that due to shortages of experts and restrictions on the entry of essential prosthetic materials, it could take years—possibly five or more—to address current needs.
The spokesperson also noted additional health concerns in the territory, including skin diseases and other conditions linked to unsanitary environmental conditions and the presence of pests and rodents.
He emphasized the urgent need for international prosthetic specialists and called for unrestricted access for medical supplies and prosthetic materials, stating that current limitations are significantly hindering care delivery, according to reports.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has been severely strained for years under blockade conditions, with the population facing widespread shortages of basic necessities.
Since the escalation of conflict in October 2023, the territory has experienced extensive casualties and destruction, placing enormous pressure on an already fragile healthcare system, according to reported figures.
