Israeli Officials Discuss Possibility of Advancing Election Date
(MENAFN) Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen stated on Monday that internal discussions are taking place regarding the possibility of holding early national elections, which could bring the vote forward from October 27 to September 1.
Speaking to Army Radio, Cohen, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, said the idea of advancing the elections has recently been raised. He noted that the time difference between the proposed date and the current schedule is relatively small.
The current term of the Knesset is expected to conclude in October.
According to reports, political pressure is building from religious parties, which are pushing for elections to be held earlier, specifically on September 1. At the same time, Netanyahu is said to prefer maintaining the original election date of October 27.
Final decisions on the timing are expected to be influenced by broader regional developments, with reports suggesting that tensions involving Iran may play a significant role in shaping Netanyahu’s calculations.
In the background of these political discussions, Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant were issued arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court in November 2024 over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the Gaza conflict. Separately, Israel is also facing proceedings at the International Court of Justice concerning the same war.
The situation continues to unfold as political, legal, and regional pressures intersect with Israel’s domestic electoral considerations.
