Fresh Israeli Strikes Kill Eight More in S. Lebanon

(MENAFN) At least eight people were killed across southern Lebanon on Sunday as Israel unleashed a fresh wave of airstrikes on multiple towns and villages, in what constitutes the latest violations of an ongoing ceasefire, a state news agency reported.

Near the coastal city of Tyre, an Israeli airstrike claimed three lives — two Syrian nationals and one Egyptian citizen. In the same area, a separate drone strike targeting a motorcycle killed one additional person.

Further inland, an Israeli strike on a residential house in the town of Breqa killed two sitting municipal council members. Simultaneously, a raid on the town of Qalawiya in the Bint Jbeil district claimed two more lives. A separate strike on the town of Safad al-Battikh left three others wounded.

The fresh bloodshed comes amid a fragile ceasefire brokered by Washington that took effect on April 17 and was subsequently extended through mid-May.

According to official Lebanese government data, Israel has conducted an expanding campaign of strikes across Lebanon since March 2 — shortly after Hezbollah retaliated in response to the Iran war — killing nearly 2,700 people and forcing more than 1.6 million others to flee their homes.

Sunday's deadly strikes raise renewed alarm over the durability of the truce and Israel's adherence to its terms, as civilian casualties continue to mount across the country's battered south.
