CENTCOM Launches ‘Project Freedom’ to Support Shipping in Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) The US military says it will begin implementing a new initiative called “Project Freedom” to assist commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) states on Sunday that its forces will support merchant vessels attempting to transit the key waterway under President Donald Trump’s directive.
“U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces will begin supporting Project Freedom, May 4, to restore freedom of navigation for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz,” it said in a post on the US social media platform X.
CENTCOM adds that the operation will involve a range of military assets, including guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft operating from land and sea, unmanned systems across multiple domains, and around 15,000 personnel.
“Our support for this defensive mission is essential to regional security and the global economy as we also maintain the naval blockade,” said CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper.
However, reports citing US officials suggest the initiative may not include direct naval escorts of commercial vessels. Instead, US ships may remain nearby to deter potential threats.
Officials also say the Navy will provide shipping guidance, including safer transit routes, particularly in areas at risk of maritime hazards such as mines, according to reports.
