Trump Announces US Escort Mission for Neutral Ships Through Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) Donald Trump said on Sunday that the United States will begin assisting and escorting neutral foreign vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday morning (Middle East time), describing the move as a humanitarian effort amid ongoing regional tensions.
As stated by reports, Trump said multiple countries had requested assistance after their ships became stranded in the busy shipping corridor. He instructed US representatives to notify those governments that American forces would provide support to guide vessels and crews safely out of the area until conditions allow normal navigation to resume.
He described the initiative, which he called “Project Freedom,” as aimed at helping civilians, companies, and nations he said were unintentionally affected by the situation. According to his remarks, some ships were reportedly running low on essential supplies due to being unable to continue their routes.
Trump added that the effort was intended “for the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States,” while warning that any disruption to the operation would be met with a strong response.
As stated by reports, he also said US officials are engaged in what he described as constructive discussions with Iran that could lead to positive outcomes, though Tehran has not publicly responded to the announcement.
The statement comes alongside Trump’s separate comments regarding Iran’s peace proposal, which he said he reviewed and rejected as unacceptable. He had also previously expressed skepticism, arguing that Iran had not faced sufficient consequences for its actions over recent decades.
