From Ground Battles To Drone Warfare: Bannu's Long Fight Against Terror

(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) For over two decades, in the district of Bannu, hundreds of civilians-along with personnel of security institutions-have lost their lives in the ongoing war against terrorism.

This region, located at the junction of North Waziristan and considered a key hub of the southern districts, has remained under persistent security threats and instability.

According to Regional Police Officer Sajjad Khan, a total of 33 drone attacks have been recorded in Bannu and Lakki Marwat-29 in Bannu and 4 in Lakki Marwat. These attacks resulted in 12 civilian deaths, 49 injuries, and 21 police personnel wounded.

He further stated that with the help of anti-drone systems installed by security agencies, more than 300 attempted drone attacks have been thwarted, and several drones have been shot down. In 2026, two terrorist drone operators were also killed.

District Police Officer Yasir Afridi confirmed that the anti-drone system provided to the police has proven effective, preventing over 300 drone attack attempts and neutralizing several drones.

He added that two terrorists involved in operating drones were killed during 2026.

The first drone attack was recorded in July 2025 at the Miryan Police Station, after which the security situation in the area became even more sensitive.

According to SHO Anwar Khan Khattak of Miryan Police Station, 13 drone attacks were carried out on the station during his six-month tenure.

After 9/11, the intensity of the war against terrorism increased, and its effects were clearly felt in Bannu and surrounding areas. During this period, many personnel from the Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps (FC), and police were martyred.

In the past, drone strikes were largely limited to state-led operations, particularly in semi-tribal regions where targeted actions were carried out against militant elements.

However, over time, the nature of warfare has evolved. Terrorist groups are now using modern technology, including quadcopter drones, to target law enforcement agencies and civilians, making the security situation even more complex.

According to district administrative and educational sources, these attacks have not only caused loss of life but have also damaged educational institutions, government buildings, and basic infrastructure. Business activities have declined, and investment has nearly ceased.

The district administration reports that thousands of families have been forced to migrate, seeking refuge in temporary camps or other cities. This situation has not only created economic hardships but has also severely affected children's education and the healthcare system.

Psychologically, the war has left deep scars on the population. Continuous fear, uncertainty, and instability have led to increased mental stress, anxiety, and depression-particularly among women and children.

Frequent closures of major highways due to security concerns have disrupted transportation and the supply of essential goods, resulting in rising inflation and further complicating daily life.

Although security forces continue operations against terrorism, experts believe that military actions alone are not sufficient for sustainable peace.

A comprehensive strategy is needed-one that includes good governance, education, employment opportunities, and trust-building at the local level.

The people of the Bannu region, deeply affected by this prolonged conflict, are calling on the provincial government, security institutions, and district administration to take immediate and effective measures to establish lasting peace, so they can live without fear once again.
