Iran Says Fresh U.S. Conflict "Likely" Amid Stalled Peace Talks

(MENAFN) A high-ranking Iranian military commander has cautioned that a fresh confrontation with Washington is increasingly probable, as diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing crisis remain deadlocked, a semi-official news agency reported Saturday.

"A renewed conflict between Iran and the United States is likely, and evidence has also shown that the United States does not adhere to any commitments or agreement," said Mohammad Jafar Asadi, deputy inspector of the military headquarters, in a statement published by the news agency.

Asadi dismissed American diplomatic overtures as performative, stating: "US officials' actions and statements are largely media-oriented, aimed first at preventing a drop in oil prices and second at escaping the predicament they have created for themselves."

The commander further stressed that Tehran's forces remain on high alert, warning that the Iranian armed forces are "in full readiness for any renewed adventurism and miscalculation by the United States."

The escalation traces back to February 28, when the US and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran. Tehran responded with retaliatory attacks on US allies across the Gulf and shut down the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation took effect on April 8, followed by talks in Islamabad on April 11–12 — both of which failed to produce a binding agreement. President Donald Trump subsequently extended the truce unilaterally, at Pakistan's request, without specifying a new deadline.

In the latest diplomatic move, Iran's state news agency reported Thursday that Tehran has forwarded a fresh proposal to Pakistan to restart negotiations with Washington aimed at formally ending hostilities. Whether those efforts will gain traction remains deeply uncertain.
