US Envoy Denies Aid to Zambia Is Linked to Critical Minerals

(MENAFN) The outgoing US ambassador to Zambia has rejected claims that American assistance to the country is connected to access to critical mineral resources, according to reports.

Ambassador Michael Gonzales said Washington’s support for the country—one of Africa’s leading copper producers—is not tied to resource extraction interests, as some have suggested.

He noted that US-funded programs continue to play a major role in Zambia’s public health system, including support that helps pay the salaries of around 23,000 healthcare workers. He also emphasized that lifesaving medical assistance will continue.

According to remarks cited by a media outlet, Gonzales said: “Further, the US has resumed almost all health assistance after last year's review, providing over $400 million, including $75 million in medication.”

He added that bilateral relations between the United States and Zambia are entering what he described as a “new chapter,” based on transparency and mutual benefit, as stated by reports.
