Indonesia Denounces Seizure of Gaza Aid Fleet
(MENAFN) Indonesia on Saturday criticized the interception of a humanitarian flotilla headed toward Gaza by Israeli forces in international waters, while reaffirming its backing for the relief mission.
"Indonesia follows closely the report of attack by Israel to the Global Sumud Flotilla. We condemn the interception of the said humanitarian mission in international waters," Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vahd Nabyl stated to a news agency.
Authorities in Jakarta also emphasized the necessity for "all countries" to strictly respect and maintain the principle of freedom of navigation in international waters, in accordance with the UN Charter, as well as the duty to ensure the protection of humanitarian operations under international humanitarian law.
The Global Sumud aid flotilla came under attack on Thursday near a Greek island, approximately 600 nautical miles away from its intended destination, the heavily blockaded Gaza enclave.
That same day, Israel’s Foreign Ministry reported that 175 activists were taken into custody after more than 20 vessels were confiscated in international waters while traveling toward the Gaza Strip.
According to organizers, the majority of detained participants were later freed on the Greek island of Crete; however, two individuals—identified as Thiago and Saif—remain in detention.
