Trump Orders Preparations for Extended Blockade of Iran
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has directed advisers to prepare options for an extended blockade of Iran, according to a report.
Citing US officials, the report said recent discussions within the administration focused on intensifying economic pressure on Tehran by restricting maritime traffic to and from Iranian ports, including shipping linked to oil exports.
Officials said Trump weighed several possible approaches in internal meetings, ultimately favoring continued economic pressure over alternatives such as renewed airstrikes or disengagement from the conflict. According to the report, he viewed those options as carrying greater strategic risk.
The move comes in the context of heightened US-Iran tensions following a joint US-Israel military offensive earlier this year, which was followed by Iranian retaliatory strikes on US-related interests across the region, including in Gulf states, as previously reported.
A ceasefire was announced on April 8 through mediation efforts led by Pakistan, with subsequent talks held in Islamabad on April 11–12. However, those negotiations concluded without a final agreement.
Trump later stated that the ceasefire had been extended at Pakistan’s request while awaiting further proposals from Tehran.
He also indicated earlier this week that he was unlikely to accept Iran’s most recent diplomatic proposal, which reportedly suggested reopening the Strait of Hormuz while postponing resolution of disputes over its nuclear program to future negotiations.
