Senate Blocks Measure to Prevent Unauthorized US Military Action in Cuba
(MENAFN) The US Senate on Tuesday voted down a proposal designed to restrict the president’s authority to carry out military action in Cuba without congressional approval.
The measure, known as a War Powers Resolution, failed in a 51–47 vote. It had been introduced by Democratic Senator Tim Kaine and sought to prevent any unauthorized US military engagement involving Cuba.
Ahead of the vote, concerns were raised over recent rhetoric from US President Donald Trump regarding foreign policy direction. He has reportedly suggested that Cuba could be the next target following US military activity against Iran and has described the island nation as facing imminent collapse.
During Senate debate, Kaine criticized the administration’s approach, arguing that current military actions involving Iran have already produced negative consequences.
“Now, he wants a new war with Cuba. My colleagues and I are firm: no new, unnecessary wars,” he said.
