OIC Urges UN to Turn Gaza Ceasefire into Comprehensive Peace Settlement

(MENAFN) According to reports from a United Nations Security Council debate, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has called for the Gaza ceasefire to evolve into a broader and permanent peace framework addressing the wider Israeli–Palestinian conflict.

Speaking on behalf of the OIC, a representative emphasized that while the ceasefire agreement in Gaza was welcomed, it should not be viewed as an end point. Instead, he argued that it must lead toward a comprehensive settlement that addresses what he described as the underlying issue of ongoing occupation and repeated cycles of violence.

The statement highlighted concerns about continued instability in Gaza and other Palestinian territories, with claims that civilians are still facing severe hardship. It also referenced ongoing tensions in the West Bank and reported expansion of settlement activity, which the OIC described as further deepening instability.

The envoy also broadened the discussion to regional issues, calling for full withdrawal from occupied territories and referencing long-standing UN resolutions related to disputed areas. He argued that lasting stability in the region depends on full compliance with international legal frameworks and relevant Security Council resolutions.

In addition, the statement addressed developments in neighboring countries, welcoming reduced hostilities in Lebanon while expressing concern over reported attacks affecting international peacekeeping forces. The OIC reaffirmed support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and the protection of UN personnel operating in the region.

The envoy further criticized ongoing military actions and violations of international law, arguing that a lack of accountability continues to undermine efforts to achieve lasting peace. He urged the Security Council to take a more active role in enforcing international norms and ensuring civilian protection.

The remarks were delivered during a formal UN session focused on Middle East developments, where multiple delegations presented differing views on how to achieve long-term stability and resolve ongoing conflicts.
