Pakistan FM, UN Chief Guterres Discuss Middle East Conflict in Phone Call
(MENAFN) Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held a phone conversation on Tuesday focused on the latest developments in the Middle East conflict.
During the call, both sides also assessed Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic outreach and its engagement with various relevant stakeholders, as stated by reports from Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry.
Guterres commended Pakistan’s diplomatic initiatives, expressing what was described as “deep appreciation and support for Pakistan’s constructive role for regional and international peace and stability,” according to the statement. He also reaffirmed the UN’s “full support” for Pakistan’s continued efforts in this regard.
The discussion came against the backdrop of heightened regional tensions after a joint US-Israeli offensive against Iran on February 28, which led Tehran to respond with strikes targeting what it described as American interests across several parts of the region, including multiple Gulf states.
A ceasefire was later announced on April 8 following mediation efforts led by Pakistan. This was followed by negotiations hosted in Islamabad on April 11; however, those talks ultimately concluded without reaching a final agreement.
According to reports, US President Donald Trump later stated that the truce had been extended at Pakistan’s request while awaiting a proposal from Tehran.
