Heavy Rains Cause Flooding, Road Closures Across Syria
(MENAFN) Intense rainfall swept across parts of Syria on Monday, leading to widespread flooding that disrupted key transport routes and prompted emergency crews to respond to the developing situation.
Meteorological authorities in Syria released video footage showing powerful floodwaters rushing through Adra al-Amaliyya in the Damascus countryside, with additional reports indicating that several secondary roads in the area were also rendered impassable.
Other recordings shared by officials showed significant flooding in the Wadi Barada region, located west of Damascus, following a period of heavy and sustained rain.
In an official statement, the meteorological department confirmed that the Damascus–Deir ez-Zor highway had been closed due to rising water levels, flooding, and landslides caused by shifting soil and rocks.
Meanwhile, Syria’s Civil Defense reported that teams operating in the Damascus countryside were working to reopen the old Damascus–Homs road after mud and debris brought by torrents blocked access. “The teams are still working with heavy machinery to remove debris carried by the floods,” the agency said.
Authorities also urged motorists to remain cautious during periods of rain, advising them to avoid crossing water channels and to steer clear of agricultural routes that may become hazardous during storms.
Earlier this month, similar extreme weather conditions affected rural areas in western Daraa in southern Syria, where heavy rainfall and hailstorms caused extensive damage to farmland and crops.
