Israel Strikes Southern Lebanon Amid Fragile Ceasefire
(MENAFN) Israeli forces launched airstrikes and opened fire across southern Lebanon in the early hours of Tuesday, even as drones were spotted hovering over the capital, in an apparent breach of an active ceasefire agreement, media reported.
According to the agency, Israeli warplanes carried out three successive strikes on the town of Zawtar al-Sharqiya in the Nabatieh district, beginning at approximately 6 a.m. local time (0300 GMT).
Simultaneously, Israeli forces unleashed heavy machine gun fire directed at the Mihniyeh neighborhood in the town of Bint Jbeil, further escalating tensions along the volatile southern frontier.
Surveillance drones were also observed over Beirut, deepening alarm in a capital already on edge despite the fragile truce.
The incidents come against a backdrop of staggering humanitarian loss. Lebanese official figures place the death toll from Israeli strikes across Lebanon at more than 2,500 since March 2, with upwards of 1.6 million people forcibly displaced — a crisis of catastrophic proportions.
The ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, which took effect on April 17, had appeared to hold a tentative line — only to be extended by an additional three weeks just last Thursday. Tuesday's strikes now cast serious doubt over the durability of that agreement, raising urgent questions over compliance and the prospects for lasting calm in the region.
