UN Lauds Arrest of Officer Linked to 2013 Tadamon Massacre in Syria

(MENAFN) The United Nations on Monday endorsed the arrest of Amjad Youssef, a former officer under the Bashar Assad regime implicated in the 2013 Tadamon massacre in Syria, describing the development as a landmark step toward justice for one of the conflict's darkest chapters.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric announced during a press conference that Claudio Cordone, deputy special envoy for Syria, had concluded an official visit to the country, during which he characterized Youssef's detention as "a significant moment of accountability for the country."

Speaking on behalf of the organization, Dujarric conveyed the UN's formal endorsement of the arrest, stating: "We welcome all efforts and steps taken towards ensuring accountability of all those responsible for international crimes potentially committed in Syria, with a view to placing the victims and their families at the center of justice."

He underscored that achieving meaningful justice in post-conflict Syria demands far more than individual prosecutions, stressing that transitional justice "requires a comprehensive strategy anchored in a legal framework aimed at achieving truth, accountability, reconciliation, reparations and non-repetition." He further emphasized that "affected communities must also have a genuine voice in shaping serious transitional justice strategy."

The arrest marks one of the most consequential accountability developments in Syria since the fall of the Assad regime, with the UN signaling its intent to closely monitor whether Damascus follows through with a broader and more systematic reckoning for atrocities committed during more than a decade of devastating civil war.
