Putin Hold Talks with Iran FM in St. Petersburg as US–Iran Talks Stall
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks on Monday in St. Petersburg with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran remain stalled, according to reports.
During the meeting, Putin reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to strengthening its strategic relationship with Iran, saying both countries intend to continue developing their bilateral partnership.
He also expressed support for the Iranian people, describing them as “bravely and heroically” defending their independence and sovereignty following what he referred to as a joint US-Israeli military attack on Feb. 28, which he said had resulted in more than 3,300 deaths.
“Of course, we very much hope that, relying on the courage and desire for independence of the Iranian people, under the new leadership, peace will come to this difficult period of trials,” Putin said, according to reports.
The Russian president further emphasized that Moscow would work to help bring stability to the Middle East “as soon as possible.”
In response, Araghchi thanked Russia for its support amid escalating tensions with the United States and Israel, stressing that relations between Tehran and Moscow are rooted in a growing strategic partnership.
“As you rightly noted, it has been proven to the entire world that the Iranian people, through their resistance, their courage, and their spirit, successfully fought against American attacks and American aggression,” he said. “Iran has withstood everything and will continue to withstand.”
