Floods Cripple Syria's Major Roads

(MENAFN) Torrential rainfall battered parts of Syria on Monday, unleashing devastating floods that severed key highways and mobilized emergency crews across the Damascus region.

Syrian meteorological authorities released footage showing powerful floodwaters tearing through Adra al-Amaliyya in the Damascus countryside, with multiple secondary roads also reported cut off. Additional footage shared by the department captured severe inundation in the Wadi Barada area west of Damascus following intense downpours.

In an official statement, the meteorological department confirmed that the Damascus-Deir ez-Zor highway had been rendered impassable due to a combination of rising floodwaters, mud accumulation, and landslides triggered by shifting soil and rock.

Syria's Civil Defense said emergency teams deployed across the Damascus countryside were actively working to reopen the old Damascus-Homs road after torrents buried the route under mud and debris.

"The teams are still working with heavy machinery to remove debris carried by the floods," the agency said.

Civil Defense also issued a public safety warning, urging motorists to exercise heightened caution during rainfall and to avoid crossing waterways or driving through agricultural terrain.

Monday's deluge is the second severe weather event to strike Syria this month. Earlier, heavy rain and hail lashed western rural areas of Daraa in southern Syria, inflicting widespread damage to agricultural crops.
