EU Extends Myanmar Sanctions Over Rights Violations

(MENAFN) The European Union has extended its sanctions against Myanmar for an additional year, citing what it described as the country’s “continuing grave situation,” including actions undermining democracy and ongoing human rights violations, according to reports.

In a statement, the Council of the European Union said the restrictive measures will now remain in effect until April 30, 2027, following its annual review of the sanctions framework.

The sanctions currently target 105 individuals and 22 entities linked to Myanmar’s military leadership. Those listed are subject to asset freezes and are prohibited from accessing funds or economic resources, while individuals also face travel bans within the EU.

The bloc continues to enforce broader restrictions as well, including an arms embargo, bans on exporting equipment that could be used for internal repression, and a prohibition on military training and cooperation with Myanmar’s armed forces, known as the Tatmadaw.

The EU strongly condemned the military’s actions following the 2021 coup, referring to what it called ongoing serious human rights violations and widespread limitations on basic freedoms.

It also called for an immediate end to violence and urged authorities to release individuals it described as arbitrarily detained.

In addition to sanctions, the EU said it continues to suspend direct financial assistance to Myanmar’s government and has frozen aid that could be seen as legitimizing the ruling military authorities.

The bloc added that it remains prepared to introduce further targeted measures against those responsible for abuses, while emphasizing that its sanctions are designed to remain focused in order to minimize harm to the civilian population.
