Turkey Urges Cyber Sovereignty as National Security Priority
(MENAFN) Türkiye must take stronger steps to assert control over its digital space as cyberspace is increasingly treated as an extension of national sovereignty and security, Communications Director Burhanettin Duran said on Friday, according to reports.
Speaking at an event in Istanbul titled “Communication in the Century of Türkiye,” Duran highlighted growing competition across political and social spheres and noted that countries around the world now view the digital environment as a domain requiring state-level protection and regulation.
He said that recent and upcoming legal measures in Türkiye are aimed at reinforcing the country’s authority in cyberspace, stressing the need to establish clear sovereignty in the digital domain.
“We are obliged to assert our sovereignty in this regard,” he said, according to reports.
Duran warned that Türkiye faces a wide range of digital challenges, from protecting children online to securing critical national infrastructure and capabilities. He described the situation as “multi-dimensional,” adding that urgent action is necessary to address emerging risks.
He also pointed to the growing influence of digital platforms in shaping public opinion, saying that algorithm-driven systems can affect perception and information flows. Social media, he added, has increasingly become a tool used in hybrid forms of conflict by various countries in recent years.
