Moldovan Leaser Visits Kyiv for Chernobyl Memorial, Talks with Zelensky

(MENAFN) Moldovan President Maia Sandu arrived in Kyiv on Sunday to take part in commemorations marking the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and to hold talks with Ukrainian leadership.

She was received by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and expressed gratitude for the reception, describing Kyiv as “a city that has shown world what it means to refuse to be broken.” She also stated that Moldova stands in solidarity with Ukraine, adding that Ukraine’s resistance also helps protect Moldova.

In earlier remarks, Sandu said her visit would include discussions with Zelenskyy and a trip to the Chernobyl site to honor those who suffered or died during efforts to contain the nuclear accident. She emphasized that the disaster highlighted how crises cross national borders and underscored the importance of international cooperation.

Zelenskyy, in parallel statements, reflected on the containment efforts at Chernobyl, noting the construction of protective structures over the damaged reactor, including a later international project involving more than 40 countries. He said these measures remain essential for preventing radiation leakage and environmental contamination.

He also warned that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine presents additional risks to the site’s safety, alleging that military activity has included drone strikes near the area.

Both leaders used the anniversary to highlight the long-term consequences of nuclear disasters and the importance of continued international cooperation in maintaining safety at Chernobyl.
