US Unemployment Claims Top Market Expectations

(MENAFN) The number of Americans filing initial unemployment claims increased by 6,000 last week to reach 214,000, surpassing analyst expectations, fresh data from the US Labor Department showed Thursday.

The reading came in above the market consensus of 211,000, following an upwardly revised 208,000 recorded the prior week.

The four-week moving average — a smoother gauge of labor market trends — edged up to 210,750, a modest rise of 750 from the previous week's upwardly revised 210,000.

Despite the uptick in claims, broader labor market indicators continue to reflect underlying resilience. The US economy generated 178,000 jobs in March — nearly three times the 65,000 gain analysts had projected — underscoring sustained hiring momentum across key sectors.

The unemployment rate also tightened, slipping to 4.3% in March from 4.4% in February, pointing to a labor market that remains largely intact even as economic headwinds mount.
