Greece, France Deepen Defense, Strategic Partnership Agreement

(MENAFN) Greece and France have renewed their defense cooperation agreement and broadened their strategic partnership across multiple sectors, as European countries continue efforts to reinforce security and deterrence amid rising regional tensions, according to reports.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis agreed to extend the defense pact—originally signed in 2021—for another five years, with automatic renewals thereafter. The renewal was formalized during a ceremony at the Maximos Mansion in Athens, as stated by reports.

The updated agreement includes a mutual defense clause, committing both countries to support one another in the event of a threat to their sovereignty.

In addition to defense cooperation, the two nations signed nine agreements spanning education, vocational training, scientific research, innovation, energy, environmental protection, and nuclear technology, reflecting a wider expansion of bilateral cooperation, according to reports.

At a joint press conference, Macron said Greece is positioned on the front line of key European security challenges, while Mitsotakis described the visit as a reaffirmation of the strong “Greece and France alliance.”

Both leaders also called for an end to ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East and emphasized the importance of ensuring maritime security, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, as stated by reports.
